Growing microgreens at home is a very simple process. In this guide I will run through the basics - you can find more specific tips on the website, as well as videos showing the process. Everything you need is in our Starter Kit
What you will need:
- Microgreen Soil Blend (2-3L per tray).
- Seed Tray (if you have space for 5-12, you can have a full tray every day on rotation).
- 2 x Blackout / Watering Trays.
- Seeds of your choice (10-40g for small seeds, 200g for peas per tray).
- Spray Bottle (recycle one at home if you can).
- Fill the Seed Tray until it is 3/4 full and make it level by shaking/spreading.
- Use another tray/object to press down on the soil to make a firm flat bed.
- Spread the seeds as evenly and densely as possible - a tip is to start with the corners and edges then finish in the middle.
- In order for seeds to germinate they need 3 things - darkness, warmth and moisture.
- Spray the seeds and soil with water until they are thoroughly damp. This is important as the dry soil will wick the moisture away from the seeds and slow the process. You must spray once or twice per day until they have finished germination.
- Place an empty tray on top, and either stack your trays or add a weight to the top tray. This will force the roots to grow downwards.
- After 4-5 days have passed, you will notice that the sprouts have pushed the trays upwards. At this stage, they are ready to be placed anywhere that gets a bit of light.
- A windowsill or greenhouse work great - but if you only have shaded areas that's fine too - most microgreens grow perfectly with indirect light.
- You could use a tray turned upside-down to give the sprouts 24 hours of darkness with nothing on top of them. This will allow them to stretch upwards and accelerate the growth.
- That's it! You're done! Now you can trim and eat your microgreens as you please. They can continue growing on the windowsill for a very long time. Watering is easy, fill the bottom tray (with no holes) and place the tray of greens inside - the roots will suck up the water from below by way of capillary action.
